Our Cereals: Winter Wheat
Through our partners in Germany, we test a range of Winter & Spring Wheat and if this fits the UK market, we will progress these through the UK system.
We carry out official trials for BSPB and AHDB at both of our trial’s sites.
Why our wheat?
Our winter wheat varieties are centred around a very successful partnership between our sales and marketing partners Elsoms Seeds and two of our Saaten Union member companies, Nordsaat and ASUR plant breeding. This partnership started in 2013 with the formation of Elsoms Wheat Limited (EWL) and has produced noticeable varieties that have been successful both in the UK and in continental Europe.
EWL has an extensive trials and testing programme and Saaten Union UK (SU UK) form a major part of this trials network. Our main field site in Suffolk and our satellite site in north Lincolnshire host many EWL trials at all stages of development. Accurate and successful trialing is paramount when selecting new varieties for development. Successful breeding and performance trials lead to robust, important, varieties, for both the UK and Europe.
The EWL programme currently has several lines in the recommend list as fully approved and candidate varieties. The extensive breeding programme produces a continuous pipeline of new and exciting varieties both for current and future agricultural senarios. Historically EWL has bred successful soft group 3 and 4S wheats. This success will continue and we are hopeful that we will soon have a portfolio that will span across all UK wheat groups.
The Saaten Union Group are also involved in Hybrid Wheat with our breeders ASUR plant breeding in France. ASUR have been developing hybrid wheat for over 20 years and have produced many successful varieties. The development of this crop continues and at SU UK we evaluate new lines to assess their suitability to UK conditions. A new generation of SU Hybrid wheats has been recently developed and we are testing several promising lines throughout the UK.
