Why our spring oats?

Saaten Union has historically had a strong spring oat portfolio. Our breeding company Nordsaat has a dedicated oat breeding field station in northern Germany on the island of Rugen. This successful programme is managed by our oat breeder Dr Steffen Beuch.

The UK oat crop is split between winter and spring sowing. Historically the winter varieties had more of the market share but more recently this has switched to more spring lines. In some areas of the UK winter sowing has become more difficult due to autumn weed control, namely blackgrass.

The Saaten Union spring oat portfolio is extensive across Europe and we have several varieties in the UK that fit perfectly to our conditions. Our varieties break down geographically and also by market so we have something for every grower.

We have long standing varieties that are recognized for their consistent quality such as ‘Canyon’ that is used in Scotland by Quaker. ‘Asterion’ which is a favoured variety in the organic sector due to its excellent agronomic traits and good quality.

We also have new lines coming through the system such as the ‘Caledon’ which is the highest yielding variety on the Recommended List.
